Patty Melt Recipe

A classic diner sandwich made with juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, and crispy toasted rye bread.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Method
 

  1. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet and cook sliced onions over medium-low heat until caramelized.
  2. Season ground beef with salt and pepper and shape into thin patties.
  3. Cook patties in a skillet for 3–4 minutes per side until browned.
  4. Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard to make the sauce.
  5. Butter the outside of bread slices and assemble sandwiches with cheese, beef patty, onions, and sauce.
  6. Grill sandwiches in a skillet until bread is golden brown and cheese melts.
  7. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Cook onions slowly for the best flavor.
  • Thin patties work best for sandwiches.
  • Use medium heat to prevent burning the bread.
  • Serve with fries or pickles for a classic diner meal.
