Shrimp Cocktail Recipe

A classic appetizer made with tender shrimp and a bold, tangy cocktail sauce.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound large shrimp peeled and deveined with tails on
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 lemon sliced
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 cups ice
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon hot sauce

Method
 

  1. Bring water to a boil with lemon, salt, peppercorns, and bay leaf.
  2. Add shrimp and cook for 2–3 minutes until pink.
  3. Transfer shrimp to an ice bath.
  4. Mix ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce.
  5. Chill shrimp and serve with sauce.

Notes

  • Do not overcook shrimp
  • Always use an ice bath
  • Serve well chilled
  • Sauce can be made ahead
